I've been thinking about it for awhile, and I finally got around to diagramming it out tonight. It's not a perfect or comprehensive solution, but it is a good start. I'm going to print this out and continue to study and tweak it.

Teaching Flowchart

Nice flow chart! I like the logic here. What do you do to assess the first question, your own emotional readiness. I find that this is probably one of the biggest factors for me. The triangle you talked about the other days helps with this. Also, it is of course not a binary answer. It is also not often the first thing I think when the whining/tantrums start.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a tough one, and I often forget it. I can't say I'm the best at it, but I've found that the hardest nights often start when I'm tired or worked up. For me, if most of my mental energy is being spent by not showing that I'm getting frustrated, then I know the answer to the first question is "no." If I have a clear mind and I don't feel emotion building up, I know I'm ready to teach.
DeleteCan I just say that I love this corner of the internet?
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm way amused at seeing parenting broken down into a logical data-minded approach. You are awesome. I can just imagine the conversations you two have in person about your toddlers.
Second, two of the best guys I met at BYU are out rockin' it as Dads now. How cool is that? A few years ago we were being dorks together, and now we have others' lives in our care and we are all learning and doing our best as parents.
Where are you guys now, anyway? Maren just moved back to Provo and I more or less never left. We should have a get together and meet each others' families! With Brent, too.
Thanks for your insights, Data-Dad.
Hey Jodi! Great to hear from you! Melissa and I are still in Indiana. Hopefully I'll be able to finish up my degree here at Purdue sometime next year.
DeleteI hope you are your family are well!
Hi Jodi! Glad you like this little corner. I never know who will stumble upon it. It's been more of a personal project, but I'm always glad when I hear it can help anyone else.
DeleteMy wife Sadie and I are in Madison WI. Maren and Dave actually lived a few streets over before they moved back to Utah. Crazy small world, isn't it?
I can't believe how time flies. I hope everything continues to go well for you!
